Where Is Pep Going?
Headlines were made this past weekend after Pep Guardiola announced his decision to leave Bayern Munich at their Christmas party. According to chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Guardiola has already chosen his next destination. Yet where that is remains to be seen. The 44 year-old former Barcelona manager has been linked with Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal. While Rummenigge says he thinks he knows where Guardiola will ultimately go, he wanted to leave the announcement to either him or his future employer.
Despite Guardiola’s decision to leave Bayern next summer, the former striker says he holds no ill feelings toward him. When speaking to the German newspaper Bild, he says that at the Christmas party, Guardiola came to him and said he was “looking for a new challenge”, in an apologetic tone. Carlo Ancelotti, who had formerly cut his teeth at Milan, Chelsea and Real Madrid, has signed a three-year deal to replace Guardiola at Bayern.
After he saw the signs that Guardiola was getting restless over the summer, Rummenigge said that he was aware that the Spaniard would most likely move on in the future. Previously, Guardiola played as a defensive midfielder and spent much of his career with Barcelona, where he helped win the European Cup in 1992 and four successive La Liga titles from 1991 to 1994. While training as a manager, he played for Brescia and Roma in Italy, Al-Ahli in Qatar and Dorados de Sinaloa in Mexico. He’s had an extremely successful career as a manager, winning 14 trophies in the first four years of his managing career, earning him a reputation as one of the best managers in the world.
