Beckham Faces Suspension
The NFL has been discussing potential discipline for Odell Beckham Jr., although it seems more likely that the Giants receiver won’t receive anything beyond a one-game suspension. This is for his actions during the Giants game last night against the Panthers, where he delivered a deliberate shot to the helmet of Carolina cornerback Josh Norman after the play had ended. In addition to this, Beckham incurred three personal foul penalties.
With the recent talk on concussions, there’s been a movement to prevent head-to-head contact, and according to Norman, this is a “blatant” example of that. Beckham and Norman had it out for each other almost from the start of the game, repeatedly shoving and wrestling with each other. On one drive, Beckham was flagged twice for unnecessary roughness, while Norman drew an unnecessary roughness penalty as well. According to Norman, Beckham should have been ejected, and hopes that the league punishes him.
In a statement, the NFL said that the choice to eject a player can only be made by on-field officials. After the game, Beckham was asked if he lost his cool with Norman. In response, he simply said that it was “unfortunate” that the Giants lost. Beckham also repeatedly credited the Panthers and took blame for dropping an early touchdown pass, regretting his three penalties but adding that officials tend to flag the player who retaliates as opposed to the instigator. Giants coach Tom Coughlin said that Beckham lost his composure, but regained it later on in the game. Although the Giants went on to mount a 28-point comeback, they ultimately lost on a last-second Graham Gano field goal. If you’d like to learn more, you can click here!
